Biden Names Harris to Address Border Crisis

Influx of Migrants Creates Political Challenge

54% of Encounters Involve Non-Central American Citizens

WASHINGTON - President Joe Biden has appointed Vice President Kamala Harris to address the ongoing border crisis, as the number of migrants crossing the US-Mexico border has surged in recent months. According to data released by US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), 54% of all encounters at the southern border in December 2023 involved citizens of countries other than Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras, highlighting the complex nature of the crisis.

The appointment of Harris to lead the government's response to the border crisis comes amid mounting pressure from Republicans and some Democrats for the administration to take action. The surge in crossings has placed a strain on border resources and has become a major political issue.

As part of her role, Harris will be tasked with addressing the root causes of migration, such as poverty and violence in Central America, as well as working with Mexico and other regional partners to improve border security.
